Beschreibung: Europe’s seas have become important in terms of policy making on both European and national level. The exploitation of sea and coastal areas for economic purposes is becoming increasingly important but there are also growing concerns on environmental issues. The ESPON project ESaTDOR (2010-2012), coordinated by the University of Liverpool, investigates the current uses of Europe’s seas through mapping sea use patterns, typologies, dynamics and inter-linkages, taking into account sustainability and climate change. In doing so, the project will identify patterns of sea use and of types of coastal regions as well as potential areas of conflict between the use of sea areas and their deterioration. In this context, the study of employment patterns in sea areas and the evaluation of the present state of maritime clusters are equally important. The overall analysis of the relationship between terrestrial and maritime planning is seeking optimal practices for maritime governance.
