The ICZM-Oder research project is a German initiative, supported by the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research Germany). Carried out in a cross-border area between Germany and Poland, this project started in 2004. The aim is to set up the basis for a long-term management of the Oder estuary. After a successfull first three years period (2004-2007), the project will be renewed for three other years (2007-2010).
Concrete aims of the project are first to establish a german-polish dialogue concerning coastal areas, but also to set up concrete tools in order to build a basis for a sustainable development for the Oder estuary. Geographical Information System (GIS), Regional Information System (data basis) and decision-making support systems are the essential instruments developed in this research project. ICZM means also the development of indicators of sustainability and the integration of climate change knowledges. On its side, the dissemination of the information and the ICZM-teaching contribute to the participative process of the project.
